Building Social Cohesion Through Culture

Building Social Cohesion Through Culture

We are learning from our implementation of the Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism (BRAVE II) that social cohesion initiatives are most effective when they are culturally grounded and inclusive.

Trained community peacebrokers in 10 border communities in the Upper East and Upper West Regions guided their communities design and host traditional food and culture durbars aimed at promoting integration and peaceful coexistence between diverse ethnic groups in the community. In Gwollu (Sissala West District) and Mandago (Pusiga District), ethnic groups including the Fulbe, Moshis, Bissa Ganwuro, Sissalas and Kusasis demonstrated how their indigenous meals are prepared, as well as explained the cultural significance of their dances. These exchanges created spaces of joy, trust, and unity.

The Paramount Chief of Gwollu, Kuoro Daniel Bajor V shared at the durbar “In a world that often feels divided, the simple act of connecting person to person becomes a powerful force for mutual understanding, respect, and lasting peace. Continue to champion initiatives like this that bring diverse groups together and remember that social cohesion is the foundation upon which peace is built.”

Celebrating culture together transforms diversity into unity. By cooking, dancing, and celebrating side by side, communities are weaving bonds of trust and proving that social cohesion is the true foundation of lasting peace.
